Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Great Britian decided to throw a huge fair for the entire world called the " The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of all Nations". Countries from all over the world would bring their inventions, their machines, and their goods to this fair. But for such a huge fair they would need a huge building to house all these exhibits. They decided to build a building with an enormous glass ceiling. It was made out of a million feet of glass. The people of Great Britian were afraid that a building with a glass ceiling like that would break. So to the prove them wrong. The designer Mr. Paxton built a smaller version of the building and had troops of soldiers jump and stomp inside it shaking the ground to see if the ceiling would break. It remained standing so the Queen had the large one built for the great fair. It was built in Hyde Park in London, England and called the Crystal Palace. It was amazing and on May 1, 1851 Queen Victoria and Prince Albert opened the doors. It shone in the sun and flags from all over the world hung on the roof. It would have been amazing to see a building like that! Here is a painting of what the ceiling looked like from inside.
