Panama Canal: Due Nov 20, 2009
What is the Panama Canal: Watch this video and find out why it was so important to trade today.
They used steam powered shovels and years and years of work to dig out all the rocks and dirt to connect the two oceans. The canal is around 48-51 miles depending on where you read. The Canal was so amazing. It had to lift ships up to a new water level in order for the ship to make it all the way to the other ocean and keep moving through the canal. Engineers had to find a way to lift the ships up and they developed the locks system. This is a video that shows how the lock system of the canal works. You can do an experiment at home with your Mom and make your own canal after you watch this.
How to build your own locks system to show your mom how it works.
Materials:
Shoebox
Popsicle sticks
2 toy ships( one tug boat)can make out of legos
blue contruction
Tape and glue
string
Put an opening at the end of the shoebox on the bottom for the ship to enter. Now build a track out of the popsicle sticks that lifts up the ship to the top of the box. Under the popsicle sticks put the blue construction paper to represent the water. At the other end of the box put another door at the top of the box that lets the ship out on the other end at a higher level. The tug boat helps move the ship through. Connect a string to your boat and tugboat and use your tug boat to pull your boat up the track and out the top of the box.
Whats happening in the rest of the World:
In China, a rebellion had started. It was called the Boxer Rebellion. China had been forced to open it's doors to the west and this made alot of chinese people mad. Some of the young men and women formed a secret society . They called themselves the Society of Righteous and Harmonious fist. But the westerners called them the Boxers because they were so good at Martial Arts. Here is a picture of a boxer. They wore red sash on their head and belt.
In fact, the boxers believed that the Christian missionaries in China were bad and they didn't want people becoming Christians. They decided to attack the Christian missionaries. Mrs. Oswald's, Great Grandma and Grandpa were missionaries in China during this time and lost two of their children in the boxer rebellion. They had to escape China and come back to America. It was a very sad time for them. They had a heart for the Chinese people and we should also have a heart for the Chinese people. China became a very closed nation ater this. People are put in prison and killed still today in China for believing in Jesus. Please pray for China.
